Betty June Wayne Long, 91, went to be with Jesus and her oldest daughter Kathy on August 5, 2017.
Betty was born in Jackson, Tennessee July 1, 1926, the only child of John W. and Nelle Moseley Wayne. She lived her entire life here.
In April of 1939 a beautiful 12 year old Betty was spotted by then 14 year old Johnny Long, and he told his friend that he was going to marry her. On January 22, 1943 at age 16 and 18, they eloped to Corinth, Mississippi, and Betty then dedicated the rest of her life to John and the seven children they would have between 1944 and 1964.
She was a lifelong member of First Christian Church, and for many years played the piano in churches all over West Tennessee, as John served as minister. For over twenty years she was owner and manager of the Bible Book Store, which John had bought because a daughter worked there. Actually, Betty always went along and supported John whatever his adventure, buying grocery stores, Shetland ponies, or fire trucks. They also traveled the world together on many trips and made wonderful memories.
Betty spent the last years of her life declining due to NPH (normal pressure hydrocephalus) which ultimately ended her life here on earth. She was preceded in death by her parents, her in laws, John Richard and Evie Long, and her daughter Kathryn Long Moorman.
She leaves behind to cherish her love and memory husband of 74 years, John R. Long, four sons, Michael (and wife Teresa) Long, Ricky ( and wife Brenda) Long, Dr. Danny Long, and David Long, and two daughters, Ellen (and husband Tony) Stafford, and Kerry (and husband Bob) Carroll. Also a son in law, Bill Moorman (and his wife Marilyn), along with 15 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at Smith Funeral Home North with Mike Gillespie officiating, and the family sharing memories. Pallbearers will be grandsons.
The family would like to thank a very special caregiver, Judy Lutz, the staff of Intrepid Healthcare Services, and Avalon Hospice for their love and care.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and the charity of the donor's choice.
